Meet Ashwetha, a curious and enthusiastic 6th-grade student who joined our Joyful Learning classes with no foundation in Hindi, just able to read a few words with no comprehension scoring an impressive 75% on the Prathamica exam in just 120 hours - without any preparation.
Over an 8-month period, Ashwetha attended 110 hours of Joyful Learning classes, immersing herself in the material without the pressure of exams. Our methodology focuses on making learning enjoyable and interactive, helping students develop a deep understanding of the subject matter.
When the Prathamica exam approached, Ashwetha didn't receive any special preparation or coaching during the last two weeks due to her school's exam schedule. Yet, she confidently took the exam and scored an impressive 75%!
Ashwetha's story is not an isolated case. Her entire batch, with a maximum preparation of just 4 hours, achieved an average score of 80%! This is a clear indication that our Joyful Learning methodology fosters deep understanding and long-term retention.
Sri Lasya, a grade 3 student, was struggling with reading understanding and phonics before joining Joyful English classes. However, after participating in the program, she demonstrated a remarkable improvement in her reading skills, outperforming her previous performance by a factor of 10.
⦿ - Lasya effortlessly and fluently read a 3rd-grade CBSE textbook in just 8-10 months.
⦿ - This transformation from struggling to read words and sentences to comfortably reading an entire grade-level textbook showcases the effectiveness of the Joyful English methodology.
⦿ - Approximately 60% of students who participated in the Joyful English program showed significant improvement in their reading skills, with many comfortably reading 3rd-grade textbooks.
⦿ - When implemented school-wide, the program led to a 200% improvement in reading skills among students.
⦿ - Our results reflect a consistent trend across the entire student body, demonstrating the Joyful English methodology's ability to transform reading skills across a large group of students.
Meet Sana Sri, a 5th-grade student who joined our Joyful English program just three months ago. In a remarkable turn of events, she outsmarted her 8th-grade cousin in Hindi, who had been studying the language for 8 years!
Vishnu, a teacher at Tamarai, shared an incredible experience. During a holiday STEM workshop, students who attended Joyful English classes (primary grade children) exhibited exceptional problem-solving skills and intrinsic motivation, completing tasks in half the time taken by their older peers (secondary school children). Sana Sri's story is not an isolated case; similar results have been seen wherever the Joyful approach is used. But we've had some real-life incidents that gave us a peek into subskill transfer. In the rural areas of Cuddalore, the Tata Chemicals Rural Development (TCSRD) team faced a daunting challenge. Students were skipping classes to work with their parents, prioritizing daily sustenance over education.
Despite considering incentives like snacks, logistics posed a significant hurdle. This led the team to ponder: What if learning could be made so enjoyable that students would attend classes without external motivation?.
Introducing Joyful English classes was the answer. Designed to spark intrinsic motivation, these classes were engaging, interactive, and fun. Initially, students were hesitant, but as they began to enjoy the classes, something remarkable happened. Attendance improved, and listening comprehension skills grew. Students were no longer motivated by external rewards but by a genuine love for learning.
The TCSRD team had stumbled upon something special – a sustainable learning model that harnessed the power of intrinsic motivation. Learn how to harness the power of intrinsic motivation in your own classroom.
In the rural community of Pudunagar, Pondicherry, we faced a challenge: how to provide world-class teacher training to local village teachers with minimal formal education. Anandi, a 12th-pass teacher with a passion for children, exemplifies our approach.
- Identified passion and potential in local teachers like Anandi - Provided training and support to enhance their teaching skills - Encouraged reflection and continuous improvement
Anandi now delivers high-quality English classes at Thamarai, incorporating movement, dance, and activities, making learning engaging and fun. Her success is not isolated; other local teachers, inspired by her model, have also transformed their teaching practices, achieving excellent results.
- Passion and potential can be more important than formal education - World-class training can be adapted for local contexts - Empowering local teachers can lead to international-standard education
This case study demonstrates that with the right approach, it is possible to unlock the potential of local teachers, even with minimal training, and provide world-class education to rural communities.
A pilot study was conducted at Alan Kuppam Primary School to investigate the impact of reducing the affective filter on learning outcomes.
In the initial dictation assessment, Durga was able to write only two out of ten basic words, indicating a substantial gap in his language proficiency. His inability to complete the task reflected his low self-efficacy and fear of learning.
In the final assessment, Durga demonstrated remarkable progress, attempting all ten words with some errors and additionally writing ten more words from recent classes. Notably, he also wrote a few lines from a rhyme, showcasing his improved confidence and language skills.
This case study illustrates the transformative power of reducing the affective filter in learning. By providing a nurturing environment and comprehensible input, Durga's motivation and participation increased, leading to significant improvements in his language proficiency. This study highlights the importance of addressing the affective filter in education to unlock students' full potential.

TCSRDIn 2020, I had the privilege of attending a class led by Mr. Raghu, CEO of English Labs, at STEM Land. The enthusiasm of the students was inspiring and highlighted the need for similar programs in rural areas. Recognizing this, we launched a pilot program during the COVID pandemic, which saw remarkable success—students who were typically disengaged quickly embraced learning English and gained confidence in speaking publicly.
